Gasket Assignment
Project overview
The learning objective of this assignment is to learn some basic manufacturing skills for mechanical components in the EPIC workshop. In this project, the mechanical component that will be manufactured is a gasket. This includes making accurate measurements, producing a detailed and dimensioned sketch which will be taken to create a CAD model and learning how to use GibbsCAM software for the CNC mill.
Dimensioned Sketch
After measuring the dimensions of the aluminum gasket, a hand drawn sketch was made (shown in the image below). Some challenges that occurred during this process were the requirement to make very accurate measurements and to produce the sketch in a way that will be easy to read and understand. The sketch had to be very accurate because it will serve as the basis of the original model and will be used in PTC Creo.
CAD Modelling
The image on the left is an example of the gasket that was completed in PTC Creo.
CAD Drawing
After the part had been modeled in CAD, a drawing of the part was made. All of the important dimensions have been added to ensure that it will be easy to follow while redundant dimensions have also been deleted off the drawing.
Final Product
The CAD file from PTC Creo was then uploaded to GibbsCAM Software when it was finished. Once the configuration and pathway of how to make the gasket was made, the file was processed and converted into a G-Code and sent to the CNC mill. The final product of the gasket is shown below.
Conclusion & Evaluation
After completing this assignment, I have attained new skills that will benefit me in the future. This includes making accurate measurements through different methods by using a caliper . I also learnt how to use GibbsCAM software and how to manufacture parts by using a CNC mill. Lastly, the gasket has been tested and fits within the aluminum block.
